Transpositions: Music/Image, XIII. International Conference of the Department of Musicology

As always sensitive to the constantly moving and changing contemporary world, of which it is said to be dominated by images, yet also to be the world of ubiquitous musics, Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, announces its XIII. International Conference: Transpositions: Music/Image. Revisiting the different relations of music/sound/aural and image/visual, while embracing the notion of their everchanging positions, and possibilities of numerous (re)positionings of their interpretations, we “claim the right” of music(ology) to the “transposition” here offered as the term for capturing different procedures/protocols/processes of production, distribution and reception of artistic and academic practices. The term “transpositions” is understood as an “in-between space of zigzagging and of crossing: non-linear, but not chaotic; nomadic, yet accountable and committed; creative but also cognitively valid; discursive and also materially embedded – it is coherent without falling into instrumental rationality”. (R. Braidotti, 2006)
Following the discussion we initiated two years ago with our “Musical Practices: Continuities and Transitions” Conference, we are interested in transpositions as procedures of: translations; transformations; transitions; translocations; transfers; transfusions; transmutations; transfigurations; transmediations of the music/image.
The slash of music/image here stands as a sign of multiplicity of relations, accentuating their différence/différance. It should suggest the possible thematic areas such as:
• music and image;
• music or image;
• music as image;
• music of image;
• music in image;
• music beyond image;
• music behind image
and
• vice versa
Academics of all fields of musicology are invited, including those dealing with music from the position of other disciplines.

The submission deadline has been extended to December 15, 2015.
Please include your short biography and an abstract of 250 words. You will be notified by 31 January 2016 if your topic has been accepted.
The official language of the conference is English. It is possible to deliver papers also in German, French, Russian, and Serbian, but the authors are kindly requested to provide translation in English.
The time limit for the presentation and discussion of your paper is set at 30 minutes in total.
Selected papers presented at the conference will be published in the proceedings.
Conference fee: 70 €. Both participation at the Conference and the publication of a text whose topic has been accepted by the Program Committee are conditional upon the payment of the participation fee.
The travel expenses, per diem expenses and hotel accommodation are to be covered by the participants.

The conference will include invited sessions on the topic of Jean Monnet module supported by the European Commission, entitled “Musical identities and European perspective: an interdisciplinary approach”. Invited sessions will welcome scholars and researchers from diverse fields of humanities, (ethno)musicology and interdisciplinary studies for vigorous dialogue and exchange on subjects related to musical identities and European perspective.
